The symptom just started. The dreamweaver CS3 hangs on “Initializing Extension data” when I start the program.

Rebooting did not help.

But http://www.adobe.com/go/kb401118 did help me.

How to re-create the Dreamweaver user configuration folder (CS3 on Windows XP, Vista)

If Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 starts displaying errors, crashing, or behaving unpredictably, it is possible that the Dreamweaver user configuration folder is corrupted. The configuration folder stores individual user’s customizations, such as snippets, menu options, extensions, spelling dictionaries, etc. To test for a corrupt user configuration folder, try the following:

Note: This procedure requires you to locate hidden files, hidden folders and extensions for known file types. By default, Windows Explorer doesn’t show hidden files, hidden folders, and file name extensions that it recognizes.

To show hidden files, hidden folders, and extensions for known file types:

  1. In Windows Explorer, do one of the following:
    • In Windows XP, choose Tools > Folder Options.
    • In Windows Vista, choose Organize > Folder and Search Options.
  2. Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
  3. In Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files And Folders.
  4. Deselect Hide Extensions For Known File Types.
  5. Click OK.

Note: Re-creating the Dreamweaver Configuration folder restores Dreamweaver settings to their defaults.

To re-create the Dreamweaver user’s Configuration folder on Windows XP:

  1. Quit Dreamweaver.
  2. Go to Start > My Computer.
  3. Rename Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration to Configuration Old.
  4. Start Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver creates a new Configuration folder.

To re-create the Dreamweaver user’s Configuration folder on Windows Vista:

  1. Quit Dreamweaver.
  2. Go to Start > Computer.
  3. Rename Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9\Configuration to Configuration Old.
  4. Start Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver creates a new Configuration folder.
